At the European Kayak-Canoe Championships which ended this weekend in Szeged, Hungary, Cătălin Chirilă confirmed he remains one of the favorite Romanian athletes to scoop an Olympic medal. On Saturday, Chirilă won the final of the single 1000m canoe race, an Olympic event. The Romanian was followed by the Czech Martin Fuksa, who finished the race 244 thousandths of a second later, and Serghei Tarnovschi of the Republic of Moldova, who crossed the finish line almost three seconds behind the winner. The gold won by Chirilă was the only medal won by the Romanian delegation.

At the rowing World Cup held in Poznan, Poland, Romania won only one medal. The women’s four-scull crew, made up of Cristina Drugă, Larisa-Andreea Bogdan, Andreea Popa and Geanina Juncănariu, won bronze, with New Zealand and Australia ranking first and second, respectively.

Romania ranked 4th at the Golden League women’s European volleyball competition, hosted by Ostrava, Czechia. In the semifinals, the Romanian players lost on Saturday to the host country, 3-1. On Sunday, in the bronze final, Belgium defeated Romania 3-0. The competition was won by Sweden, who beat Czechia 3-2 in the final.

The Romanian tennis player Cezar Creţu won the ITF tournament in Oradea, offering 15,000 USD in total prizes. Seeded first, Creţu lost the final to another Romanian player, Gabi Adrian Boitan, the competition’s third seed, 7-6 6-4.

The European Swimming Championships continue in Belgrade. This week, the Romanian athletes are expected to take part in the swimming and jumping competitions. The biggest hopes are pinned on David Popovici, the reigning European champion in the 100m and 200m freestyle events. Six Romanian athletes will compete in swimming competitions, and four in jumping events. (VP)
