Romania grabbed 8 medals at the European Rowing Championships hosted by Szeged, Hungary – 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. The gold medals went to the women’s 8+1 crew, the women’s lightweight pair and double-scull crews, and the men’s pair. The silver medals went to the men’s double-scull and women’s four-scull crews. The bronze medals were scooped by the women’s pair and the men’s 8+1 crews. Romania was ranked 2nd in the medal standings, with Great Britain topping the list with 8 gold medals.
Romania’s delegation at the summer Olympics in Paris went up to 81 members. On Friday, the Romanian Olympic Committee announced that Ebru Bolat has secured qualification in yachting. The Romanian athlete qualified after the last pre-Olympic tournament hosted by Hyères, France, where she ranked 6th, totaling 70 points at the end of 10 races, finishing 1st once, 2nd twice and 3rd once. On Saturday, Mălina Călugăreanu won the foil event at the pre-Olympic tournament hosted by Differdange, Luxembourg.
Romania won two medals at the European Boxing Championships that ended on Sunday in Belgrade. Lăcrămioara Perijoc won silver in the 54-kg category, whereas Claudia Nechita won bronze in the 57-kg category. So far, Perijoc is the only Romanian boxer to represent Romania at the Paris Olympics.
In the EHF European Champions League quarterfinals, CSM Bucharest lost the first leg at home to Metz of France, 27-24, after a catastrophic final quarter for the Romanian champions. Both sides were equally tied until minute 43, when CSM was leading 20-18, then the French side took the lead. The top scorer for CSM was Cristina Neagu with 9 goals. The return leg is scheduled for Saturday in Metz.
FCSB has won the domestic football championship, three rounds before the end of regular season. FCSB now has a 12-pont lead over the runner-up. In the 7th round of the group phase, FCSB won 2-1 at home against Farul Constanța. On Sunday, CFR Cluj won 2-1 against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe on home turf. On Monday, Rapid Bucharest is taking on Universitatea Craiova. In Group 2, Dinamo drew 1-1 on Friday against FC Voluntari. On Saturday, FC U Craiova won 3-2 against Universitatea Cluj. On Sunday, Oțelul Galați won 1-0 against FC Hermannstadt, whereas UTA Arad won 2-0 against Poli Iași. On Monday, Petrolul Ploiești is playing FC Botoșani.
