This week the
WTA tournament in Prague has reached it second round. The tournament has total
prizes of $3.12 million. A total of six Romanian players have qualified to this
round. Gabriela Ruse defeated Irina Fetecau 6-2, 6-4. Irina Bara won 6-2, 6-2
against Zuzana Zlochova of Slovakia. Laura Paar eased past Jule Niemeier of
Germany, 6-3, 6-4, while Alexandra Cadantu won 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 against Jamie Loeb
of the United States. On Sunday, the number one seed Monica Niculescu defeated
Panna Udvardy of Hungary 7-6, 7-6, while Jaqueline Cristina, seeded 11th
in the competition, knocked out Tessah Andrianjafitrimo of France, 6-2, 6-2. A
total of 128 players have qualified to the main draw. The players knocked out
in the first round will receive $11.000 and 2 WTA points. Players reaching the
second round will get $18.000 and 20 WTA points.
This weekend saw
matches counting towards the second round of the Romanian First Football
League. On Friday, Gaz Metan Medias defeated FC Arges at home 2-nil. In Arad,
UTA drew nil-all against FC Voluntari. On Saturday, FC Hermannstadt drew 2-all
against Academica Clinceni in Sibiu. CFR Cluj also drew nil-all against Sepsi
Sfantu Gheorghe. On Sunday, FC Botosani trounced Poli Iasui 4-nil. In Craiova,
the local side Universitatea won 2-nil against Astra Giurgiu. Finally, on
National Arena Stadium in Bucharest, FCSB won 3-nil against Viitorul Constanta.
On Monday, Chindia Targoviste is playing Dinamo Bucharest. FCSB, FC Botosani
and Universitatea Craiova are in leading position, each with six points in two
matches, set apart by goal average.
