Canadian tennis player of Romanian origin, Bianca Andreescu, this
past Sunday won the WTA tennis tournament in Toronto, an event with 2.83
million USD in prize money. Andreescu grabbed a 3-1 win in the final she played
against Serena Williams. 19-year old Bianca Andreescu has thus added the second
WTA title to her record sheet, after the Indian Wells WTA tournament she won in
spring in this year. Andreescu played yet another final in Auckland.
On Sunday at the European Diving Championships in Kyiv, the
Romanian diver Constantin Popovici came in 5th in the finals of the
platform diving. On Friday, Constantin Popovici and Antonia-Mihaela Pavel also
came in 5th in the synchro mixed platform diving. Also 5th came in
Nicoleta Angelica Muscalu and Antonia-Mihaela Pavel in the synchro women’s
platform diving.
Romania has been relegated from League I to League II of the
European Athletics Team Championships.
The Romanian delegation came in 8th in Sandnes, Norway, at the end
of League I. Three other teams have been relegated from League I to League II,
Hungary, Slovakia and Lithuania. Portugal was at the top of the table and got
through to the Super League. In the last day of the competition, in the 5,000m
race, Romania’s Roxana Bârca won the only medal for the Romanian delegation.
This past weekend saw matches being played, counting towards
the 5th round of Romanian League One championship. In Voluntari on
Friday, Academica Clinceni grabbed a 3-1 win against Chindia Targoviste, whil
in the North-eastern Romanian town of Iasi, the local side Poli won the game
against Dinamo Bucharest 2-nil. On Saturday, Gaz Metan Medias clinched a 1-nil
win in the home game against Astra Giurgiu, while CFR Cluj grabbed a 3-nil home
win against FC Hermannstadt. On Sunday, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe won the game
against Universitatea Craiova, 1-nil, away from home, while in the southern
Romanian town of Ploiesti, FC Voluntari defeated FCSB, 3-1. After this past
weekend’s 5th round fixtures, CFR Cluj are at the top of the table,
with 13 points on their record sheet.
