Two Romanian handball clubs have
advanced to the Challenge Cup quarterfinals. CSM Bucharest had a tough game
against Alingsas of Sweden, drawing 24-all at home. CSM had won the first leg
away from home 29-28, and managed to even the score in the return leg in the
last minute of regular time.
Potaissa Turda had an equally tough
match against BSV Berne of Switzerland, losing 35-33 at home. Potaissa, the
winner of the trophy in 2018, moved on to the quarterfinals on aggregate after
winning in the first leg away from home 36-33.
Three Romanian tennis players this
weekend won ITF tournaments. Irina Begu won in Cairo, where total prizes stood
at 100 thousand dollars, after winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 against Lesia Tsurenko of
Ukraine in the final. Jaqueline Cristian won the ITF tournament in Trnava,
Slovakia, offering 25,000 dollars in winnings, after defeating Sofia Lanser of
Russia in the final. Finally, Ilona-Georgiana Ghioroaie won at Moastir,
Tunisia, after defeating Maria Timofeeva of Russia 7-5, 6-1 in the final.
This weekend saw matches counting
towards the last but one round of the domestic championship’s regular season.
On Friday, FC Voluntari won 2-1 against Chindia Targoviste, while CFR Cluj drew
nil-all at home against Viitorul Constanta. On Saturday, Gaz Metan Medias won
3-2 against Academica Clinceni, while Universitatea Craiova trounced Poli Iasi 5-2.
On Sunday, FC Botosani won 1-nil against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe, while Dinamo
Bucharest won 2-1 in the round’s highlight match against FCSB played on
National Arena stadium in Bucharest. On Monday, FC Hermannstadt will go up
against Astra Giurgiu. CFR Cluj tops the league tables with 49 points, followed
by Craiova with 46 points, FCSB with 43 points and FC Botosani with 42 points.
