Romania’s Davis Cup team lost this weekend the playoff match against
Spain, hosted by Marbella. The Spanish team won 3-1. On Friday, Roberto
Bautista Agut defeated Gabi Adrian Boitan, 6-3, 6-1, while Carlos Alcaraz
defeated Marius Copil 6-4, 6-3. On Saturday, the pair made up of Marius Copil
and Horia Tecău won 7-6, 6-4 against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Pedro
Martinez. In the fourth match, Roberto Bautista Agut won 6-2, 6-3 against
Marius Copil. Following this playoff match, Romania will next play in the World
Group 1 in September 16-18.
The Romanian women’s handball team on Saturday lost 27-32 to Denmark
in a match hosted by Odense and counting towards European Championship
preliminary Group 2. Denmark had won the first match played last Wednesday in
Mioveni, and is now ranked 1st with 8 points in 4 matches. Ranking
second is Austria with 5 points, followed by Romania with 3 points and the
Faeroe Islands with zero points. Romania will next play the Faeroe Islands away
from home on April 20 and will take on Austria at home on April 24, a match
that will decide which of the two teams will advance to the European
Championship.
This weekend saw matches counting towards the final round of the
2021-2022 regular season of the domestic football championship. On Friday, in
Sfântu Gheorghe, Sepsi won 2-1
against FC U Craiova. On Saturday, in Arad, UTA won 2-1 against CS Mioveni,
while Rapid defeated Academica Clinceni away from home. On Sunday, in Mediaș,
Chindia Târgoviște won 4-0 against Gaz Metan. CFR Cluj won 4-1 the match played
on home turf against Dinamo Bucharest, while FCSB won 1-0 against FC Voluntari
at home. On Monday, Universitatea Craiova will go up against Farul Constanța,
while FC Botoșani will play FC Argeș. Ahead of the group phase, CFR Cluj tops
the league tables with 38 points, while FCSB is in runner-up position with 31
