HANDBALL – The EHF Cup in women’s handball’s group stage kicked off this past weekend. On Saturday, trophy holders SCM Craiova on home court grabbed an 18-12 win against Danish contenders Nykøbing. SCM’s Andreea Ianasi and her Croatian teammate Andreea Seric were top scorers, with 4 goals each. In Group D’s other fixture, Croatian side Podravka secured 32-29 home win against Spanish opponents Bera Bera. Next SCM Craiova play an away game against Bera Bera, on January 12.

In EHF Cup’s Group A, Magura Cisnadie were thrashed by Danish side Esbjerg, 41-18, away from home. Quite surprisingly, the most efficient player of the game was Magura Cisnadie’s Ada Emilia Moldovan, who scored 7 goals. This coming Sunday, Magura take on German opponents Bietigheim, on home court. We recall this past Saturday Bietigheim grabbed a 28-25 home win against Norwegian side Storhamar.
VOLLEYBALL – Romania’s volleyball national side lost the home game against Spain, 2-3, in the southern Romanian town of Alexandria on Saturday. The match counts towards Group F of the European Championship preliminaries, the 2019 edition. In a Group F fixture, Bosnia grabbed a 3-nil win against Latvia, away from home. Spain is at the top of the table in their group, with 11 points, followed by Romania, also with 11 points. Third-placed is Bosnia with 8 points, while 4th-placed is the national team of Latvia, with zero points on their record sheet. The first two teams in each group secure their tickets for the final tournament. The other matches in group F are scheduled for January the 9th. For their match in Bosnia, the Romanians need to win two sets in order to secure their qualification.
ICE HOCKEY – In an Erste Liga fixture, Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc grabbed a 4-nil win against Hungarian opponents Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák, while ACSH Gheorgheni outclassed another Hungarian team, Újpest Budapest, 3-0. Another Romanian team, Corona Braşov, was outperformed by Vienna Capitals II, 2-1. Ferencváros Budapest are at the top of the table, with 81 points amassed in 35 games. Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc, are the runner-up team, with 76 points in 33 games.
TENNIS – The world’s number one woman tennis player, the Romanian Simona Halep, this week resumes her participation in international tournaments. Halep plays straight into the second round of the WTA tournaments in Sydney, which is the only competition Simona Halep takes part in, ahead of the Australian Open.
