The
Romanian team started with a victory in the 2024 edition of the Rugby Europe
Championship. The Oaks defeated the Polish national team away in
Gdynia with a score of 20 to 8. Romania had three touchdowns, scored by Damian
Strătilă, Alexandru Savin and Tevita Manumua, all in the first half. Tudor
Boldor converted a touchdown and, in the second part of the game, a penalty
kick. In the other game of Group B, the Belgian team beat Portugal, in Mons,
with 10 to 6. On Saturday, in Bucharest, Romania will take on Belgium.
In
the women’s handball Champions League, CSM Bucharest beat the Hungarian team
Győr 26 to 24 on Saturday, away from home. Two stages before the end of the
group stage, the Romanian champions are in 3rd place in Group A, with 15
points. In first place is Győr, with 22 points, and in second place, the Danish
team Odense, with 17. In Group B, Rapid lost, at home, to the Hungarian team
Ferencváros, 20 to 23. The Romanian vice-champions remain in 7th place in Group
B, three points behind the Budapest team, which ranks 6th. The first
two in each group go directly to the quarter-finals, and the teams in the 3rd,
4th, 5th and 6th places will have play-off matches to access the quarter
finals.
In
the EHF European League, Gloria Bistriţa ensured its qualification in the
quarter-finals of the competition, after defeating the French team Nantes 34 to
29 on Sunday, away from home, in group C. In group B, Dunărea Brăila defeated
Lokomotiva Zagreb 34 – 26 and remains in second place, two points behind the
German team Thüringer, which it will meet at home this weekend. In group D, CSM
Târgu Jiu was defeated, at home, by the Norwegian team Sola and ranks last in
the group.
In the Davis Cup, the men’s tennis team of Greece defeated, in Athens, the Romanian team 4-0, in the play-off for World Group I. The Greeks will play a tiebreaker for the final tournament of the competition, while Romania will play the next match in September, in World Group II.
Over
the weekend, there were games counting for stage number 24 of the Romanian
Football Superleague. On Friday, FC Botoşani beat Poli Iași 2-1 at home, and FC
U Craiova prevailed with the same score against the Bucharest team Dinamo. Also
with 2-1, CFR Cluj won the game against Petrolul, on Saturday, in Ploiesti. The
same score was recorded by Rapid, in Bucharest, which defeated Otelul Galati.
On Sunday, UTA defeated Universitatea Cluj and Universitatea Craiova beat Sepsi
Sfantu Gheorghe with the same score, 3-1. Monday hosts the last two games of
the leg, Voluntari – Hermannstadt and FCSB – Farul Constanţa. Leader of the ranking
is FCSB with 8 points away from the next
