Romania has won the Carpați Trophy womens handball tournament held last week in Bistrița. Romania grabbed three wins: 33-28 against Switzerland, 32-22 against Portugal and 41-35 against Austria. Ranking 2nd was Austria with two wins, followed by Switzerland and one win and Portugal in last place. The tournament in Bistrița was the final test ahead of the World Championships hosted by Denmark, Norway and Sweden over November 29 – December 17. Romania will play in Group E in Herning, in Denmark. The Romanian side will first take on Chile on December 1, then Serbia two days later and finally Denmark on December 5. The set objective for this years edition is to rank among the first seven teams. The world champion will qualify directly to next years Olympic Games, jointly with the European champions. The teams ranking 2-7 will take part in a pre-Olympic tournament to be held in April. Let us further note Romania is the only team that has taken part in all 26 editions of the World Championship.
In news from football, FCSB won Sundays highlight match against Bucharest rivals Dinamo, 1-0 in a match venued on National Arena stadium in Bucharest. Florinel Coman scored the only goal for the visiting side from free kick on minute 52. In other matches counting towards the 17th round, on Friday, FC Hermannstadt drew 0-0 against Poli Iași. In Ploiești, Petrolul won 2-1 against FC Botoșani, a team that is yet to win its first match in this years edition. On Saturday, FC Voluntari won 4-2 against Farul Constanța at home, while CFR Cluj drew 0-0 against UTA Arad at home. On Sunday, Universitatea Craiova won 3-1 agaisnt Oțelul Galați. On Monday, FCU Craiova will play Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, while Rapid Bucharest will take on Universitatea Cluj. FCSB tops the league tables with 37 points, followed by CFR Cluj with 32 points. (VP)
