Romanian athlete David Popovici
won silver in the 200m freestyle event on Sunday at the World Swimming Championships
(25m) in Melbourne. David Popovici finished the final race in 1.40.79 seconds,
outranked by Sunwoo Hwang of South Korea, who also set the competition record.
Tom Dean of Great Britain scooped bronze in the same event. This was the only
medal for Romania, which was represented by three swimmer as the championships
in Melbourne: David Popovici, Robert Glință and Andrei Anghel. For 18-year-old
Popovici, 2022 has been a remarkable year. Our athlete won gold medals in the
100m and 200m freestyle events, both in the senior European Championships, as
well as in the senior World Championships.



In news from women’s handball, in
EHF Champions League, CSM Bucharest is now leader of Group A after on Sunday
the team defeated the defending champios Vipers Kristiansand of Norway, 27-24
at home. Cristina Neagu was the topscorer for CSM with 9 goals. CSM Bucharest
tops the group tables with 15 points, while Vipers is in runner-up position
with 13 points. The competition will resume after the winter holidays break on
January 7, when CSM will play Banik Most of the Czech Republic.


In Group B, Rapid Bucharest defeated
another team from Norway, Storhamar, 36-29 away from home. Sorina Grozav scored
7 goals for Rapid. The Romanian champions are ranked 4th in the
group tables with 14 points, the same as the teams in second and third
position, Team Esbjerg of Denmark and Győr of Hungary, respectively. Metz of
France tops the group tables with 15 points. Rapid will next take on Buducnost
Podgorica of Montenegro on January 8 at home.



This weekend saw matches counting
towards the 21st round of the Romanian Football SuperLeague. On
Friday, FC Voluntari drew 1-1 against Farul Constanța. On Saturday, Sepsi
Sfântu Gheorghe defeated Universitatea Cluj 2-1 at home, while Universitatea
Craiova won 3-0 against Chindia Târgoviște, also on home turf. Sunday’s
fixtures each ended in a draw: FC Argeș drew 2-2 against CS Mioveni, Petrolul
Ploiești drew 1-1 against FC U Craiova, while UTA Arad drew 1-1 against Rapid
Bucharest. On Monday, FCSB is playing FC Botoșani at home, while on Tuesday, in
Cluj, the local side CFR will play FC Hermannstadt. Farul tops the league
tables with 45 points, followed by CFR with 44 points. (VP)
