The Romanian
women’s handball team has advanced to the European Championship hosted this
year by Slovenia, North Macedonia and Montenegro after winning 38-29 against
Austria on Sunday at home. Cristina Neagu was the top scorer for Romania with
12 goals, while goalkeeper Daciana Hosu saved 10 throws, with an efficiency of
33%. Ranking 2nd in
preliminary Group 2 was Denmark with 12 points, followed by Romania with 7
points, Austria with 5 points and the Faeroe Islands with 0 points. Euro 2022
will be held over November 4-20. The draw is scheduled on April 28 in
Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Romania has 6
representatives in the WTA 100. Simona Halep is now in 21st place.
Sorana Cîrstea is ranked 27, Gabriela Ruse is in 58th place, Irina
Begu in 62nd, Jaqueline Cristian in 69th place and Ana
Bogdan is ranked 95th. In WTA doubles standings, Monica Niculescu is
in 42nd place, Raluca Olaru in 43rd, Irina-Camelia Begu
in 48th, Irina Bara in 64th and Gabriela Ruse in 98th
position.
This weekend saw
matches counting towards a new round of the group phase in the domestic
football championship. In Group 2, on Friday, CS Mioveni won 2-0 against Academica
Clinceni, while Dinamo Bucharest won 1-0 against Gaz Metan Mediaș. On Saturday,
UTA Arad won 1-0 against Chindia Târgoviște, while Rapid Bucharest won 1-0
against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. On Monday, FC Botoșani won 2-1 against FC U
Craiova. Rapid tops the group tables with 38 points, followed by Botoșani with
35. Gaz Metan Mediaș and Academica Clinceni will be likely relegated to the
second tier, also after being deducted a number of points. Dinamo now has 16
points, and will likely play a playoff match to secure its position in the
first division. Chindia Târgoviște is the other team that is trying to avoid
the playoff match, although it is six points behind CS Mioveni and FC U
Craiova.
In Group 1, CFR
Cluj on Sunday won 1-0 against FC Voluntari. Universitatea Craiova won FC Argeș
4-0, while FCSB also won 4-0 against Farul Constanța. CFR ranks 1st
with 48 points, followed by FCSB with 46 points and Universitatea Craiova with
