Romania has no
more representatives at the Australian Open, after the last two tennis players
competing in women’s singles were ousted on Monday in the round of 16. Simona
Halep, former world no. 1, lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Alizé Cornet of France,
whereas Sorana Cîrstea was defeated by Iga Świątek of Poland in three sets,
5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

In news from
handball, CSM Bucharest on Saturday won 33-29 against Borussia Dortmund of
Germany in Group A in Champions League. The Romanian champions have thus
secured qualification to the competition’s knockout round. Right now, CSM is
ranked 4th in the group tables and will play another three group
fixtures. The top two teams advance to the quarterfinals, while teams ranking
3-6 in each group will play playoff matches in order to reach the quarterfinals.
Also in Champions League, on Saturday, SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea won 26-25 against
Chambray Touraine of France and Minaur Baia Mare lost 29-24 to Les Neptunes de
Nantes, ranking 3rd in Group B with 2 points in just as many
matches. The match pitting Măgura Cisnădie against Russia’s Lada Togliatti,
scheduled for Sunday in Group C away from home, was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Last week the
Romanian First Football League resumed. On Friday, FC Argeş won at home 2-1
against Dinamo Bucharest. On Saturday, in Ploieşti, Chindia Târgovişte drew 0-0
against FC Voluntari. In Craiova, the local side Universitatea won 1-0 in the
match against Rapid Bucharest. On Sunday, CS Mioveni won 3-1 at home against
Academica Clinceni, whereas Gaz Metan Mediaş won 1-0 against UTA Arad away from
home. In the round’s highlight match, FCSB drew 3-3 against CFR Cluj on
National Arena stadium in Bucharest. On Monday, FC Botoşani won 1-0 at home
against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, while Farul Constanţa won 3-2 against FCU
Craiova on home turf. CFR tops the league tables with 58 points, followed by
