The city of Oradea in western
Romania last week saw a major women’s handball tournament entitled ‘The
Centennial Cup’, whose aim was to mark 100 years of Romanian handball. The
trophy went to Hungarian side Ferencvaros Budapest, who secured a 32-30 win in
the finals against CSM Bucharest, a side that is representing Romania in the Champions
League.
In the first games on Friday the
Hungarians had defeated Minaur Baia Mare 36-26 while CSM clinched a 28-26 win
against another Hungarian side, Debrecen. The domestic season in women’s
handball is due to kick off on Tuesday with the games in the Romanian Cup’s
round of sixteen.
Romania’s national volleyball side
was defeated on Sunday by the Netherlands 3-1 in Group D of the European
Championship underway in Cluj, western Romania. This has been our handballers’
third defeat after a 1-3 against Turkey and 0-3 against Sweden.
The Netherlands comes first in the
ranking followed by Turkey, each with three wins out of three matches. Romania
is on the group’s last position and will take on Finland on Tuesday.
Last weekend saw the football games
counting towards the sixth leg of Romania’s domestic championship. On Friday,
Chindia Targoviste and Academica Clinceni ended in a two-all draw their game in
Buzau, southern Romania. In Ovidiu, on the Black Sea coast, local side Farul
secured a 3-0 win against Dinamo Bucharest.
On Saturday, Universitatea Craiova
clinched a 1-0 away win against Gaz Metan Medias while CFR also obtained a 1-0
away victory against FC Arges. On Sunday, in Arad, western Romania, local side
UTA clinched a 2-0 win against FC Voluntary wile Rapid Bucharest versus FC
Botosani, ended with the former’s away 1-0 win.
Monday will see the leg’s last two
games, CS Mioveni versus FCU Craiova and FCSB versus Sepsi Sf. Gheorghe. CFR is
first in the ranking with 18 points out of 18 possible, followed by Rapid with
16 points, the only side that has got no goals in the present season.
