Romania’s Marian Drăgulescu on Sunday won the silver medal in
the vault final at the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup hosted by Varna,
in Bulgaria. With an average of 14,525 points, he won 14,350 points for his
first vault and 14,700 for the second. The gold medal went to Ukraine’s Nazar Chepurnyi, who scored 14,700 on both vaults. Drăgulescu
is the only Romanian gymnast to compete in the men’s events at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament has got under
way. Romania’s Ana Bogdan, ranked 102 in the WTA standing, defeated Italy’s Elisabetta
Cocciaretto in the first round in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. In the second round,
she will face second seed Naomi Osaka of Japan, who defeated the Romanian
player Patricia Ţig, 6-4, 7-6.
Saturday saw the matches counting for the first leg of the playoffs
to avoid demotion to the second league or to win promotion to the first league.
In the first match, CS Mioveni drew nil-all against FC Hermannstadt at home,
with the former finishing third in the Second League playoffs, and the latter
finishing in the last but one place in the play-out of the First League. The return
match will be held on 2nd June in Mediaş. In the second match, FC
Voluntari defeated Dunărea Călăraşi 2-1 away. Dunărea were 4th in
the Second League play-offs, while Voluntari were 7th in the First
League play-out. The two sides will meet again on Wednesday in Voluntari.
The Romanian football side Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe on Sunday won
the last place reserved for Romania in the UEFA Europa Conference
League, a new European third club competition. Sepsi defeated
Viitorul Constanţa 1-nil in the play-offs, with their Croatian international Adnan
Aganovic scoring the match’s only goal on minute 42. Sepsi will be playing in
the second preliminary round of the new competition, just like the Romanian
vice-champions FCSB and the winners of the Romanian Cup Universitatea Craiova.
The Romanian champions CFR Cluj will be playing in the first preliminary round
of the Champions League. (CM)
