A new round in European inter-club competitions was held this
weekend. In Champions League Group A, CSM Bucharest lost to Metz of France
25-22 on Saturday away from home. The team from Bucharest is ranked 3rd
in the group standings and will play SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea in the round of 16. The
Romanian champions ended Group B in sixth place. The match SCM was supposed to
play last Sunday at home against Brest Bretagne of France was cancelled, and
the team from Râmnicu Vâlcea was awarded a walkover 3-nil win after extreme
weather phenomena in northern France prevented the French team from taking off.
Simona Halep, seeded 2nd in the Australian Open, will
play Serena Williams of the United States in the quarterfinals. In the round of
16, the Romanian eased past Iga Swiatek on Poland, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the
previous round, Williams defeated Arina Sabalenka of Belarus, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
In the domestic ice hockey championship, CS Gheorgheni on Sunday
defeated CSM Galaţi away from home, score 4-3 after stoppage time. Also on
Sunday, Corona Braşov won 4-3 against SC Miercurea Ciuc in a match that also
counted towards the Erste League. The team from Gheorgheni tops the league
tables, while Corona is ranked 1st in Erste League.
This weekend also saw matches counting towards a new round in the
domestic football championship. On Friday, FC Argeş won 1-nil against Viitorul
Constanţa at home. On Saturday, Chindia Târgovişte drew 1-all against UTA Arad,
while Dinamo Bucharest drew nil-all against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. On Sunday,
Astra Giurgiu won 3-2 against Poli Iaşi, while Universitatea Craiova drew
nil-all against Academica Clinceni. Also on Sunday, FC Hermannstadt a won 1-nil
against FCSB. The round’s last two matches are scheduled for Monday: FC
Botoșani will take on Gaz Metan Mediaș while CFR Cluj will play FC Voluntari.
FCSB tops the league tables with 48 points, followed by CFR Cluj with 47
