The main sports news of last week was the transfer of Romanian footballer Dennis Man from FCSB to the Italian side Parma. According to the media, the 13-million euro transfer makes Dennis Man the most expensive Romanian player transferred abroad directly to the First League. Man will get 1 million euros per year at his new team. He made his debut for Parma in minute 80 of a game his side lost on Sunday, in Naples, nil-2, in the 20th leg of the Italian First League.
In Romania, matches counting towards the First League’s 20th leg were held at the weekend. On Friday, the match between Universitatea Craiova and FC Arges ended in a draw, 1-all. On Saturday, Gaz Metan Medias played against Academica Clinceni at home, a meci which also ended in a draw, 1-all, while Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe faced FC Voluntari, also on home turf, and the result was 2-all.
The top-of-the table team FCSB defeated the bottom-of- the-table Politehnica Iasi, 3-1, on the National Arena in Bucharest. Another three matches were held on Sunday: FC Botosani defeated FC Hermannstadt at home, 1-nil, Astra ended in a 1-all draw the match against Viitorul Constanţa, while UTA Arad was defeated at home by Dinamo Bucharest, 1-all. On Monday, Chindia Targoviste are pitted against CFR Cluj. FCSB are still the leader of the as-it-stands table, with 45 points, while CFR Cluj are the runner-up team, with 41 points.
On Sunday in Cluj Dinamo Bucharest won Romania’s Cup in men’s volleyball, after defeating SCMU Craiova, 3-1. This is the 11th Cup won by Dinamo.
Romanian player Irina Bequ qualified on Sunday to the second round of the WTA Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne, after defeating the Chinese Saisai Zheng in the first round, in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Monica Niculescu, Mihaela Buzarnescu and Patricia Tig were defeated in the first round. Also, Simona Halep, no. 2 in the world, defeated on Monday Anastasia Potapova of Russia (WTA 101), in two sets, 6-4, 6-4 and made it to the third round of the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne. (EE)
