This weekend saw
a new round in the women’s Champions League in handball. On Saturday, SCM
Râmnicu Vâlcea lost to Györ of Hungary away from home 38-31 in Group B. Despite
the final score, the Romanian club had an exceptional first half, leading 17-15
at half time. In the second part of the game the Hungarians upped their game,
and the team from Râmnicu Vâlcea thus sustained its fourth defeat in the group.
SCM has one more game to play and is bottom of the group tables. On Sunday, in
Group A, CSM Bucharest defeated Ferencvaros Budapest 25-19 on home turf. The
odds were even in the first half, with the Hungarian side even taking the lead
at times. In the second round, Cristina Neagu made the difference on the court,
after being absent in the last two weeks after testing positive for COVID-19.
The team from Bucharest is now 3rd-placed in the group standings
with 6 points in four games.
The city of
Ostrava in the Czech Republic is this week playing host to a WTA tournament
totaling $528 thousand in prize money. A total of three Romanian players were
enrolled in the qualifying rounds. Sorana Cîrstea and Ana Bogdan lost in the
first round. Irina Begu advanced to the second round, where she was knocked
out.
Last weekend saw
matches counting towards the seventh round in the Romanian First Football
League. On Friday, FC Argeş won 1-nil at home against Astra Giurgiu. On
Saturday, Chindia Târgovişte won 1-nil against Gaz Metan Mediaş. Politehnica
Iaşi lost 1-4 to Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe at home. CFR Cluj won narrowly 2-1
