A look at the latest results obtained by Romania's athletes

Athletes
from Romania won 29 medals at the Balkans Athletics Championships hosted by the
city of Cluj, in western Romania, on Saturday and Sunday. Out of these medals 8
were gold, 14 silver and 7 bronze. Rares Toader won gold for Romania in the
shot put event on Saturday.
Claudia
Bobocea became the second gold medalist in the 800 meter dash and so did the
women’s 4×100 meter relay team. Discus thrower Alin Alexandru Firfirica,
hammer-thrower Bianca Florentina Ghelber, shot-putter Andreea Apachiţe, high-jumper
Daniela Stanciu, and runner Claudia Bobocea stepped onto the podium’s first
step on Sunday.
In the
Champions’ League Group A, the Romanian women’s handball side CSM Bucharest on
Sunday secured a 30-29 away win against Danish side Esbjerg. Cristina Neagu
scored the victory goal for the Romanian side in the game’s last second.
Neagu, who
is also the left back of Romania’s national handball side, was the top scorer
during the match against Esbjerg with ten goals scored. The match on Sunday was
the second win of the Bucharest side in the present edition of the Champions
League. Unfortunately, Romania’s
champions SCM Ramnicu Valcea have come a cropper in their home match against
Odense, the other Danish side in the competition, who secured a 30-21 win.
Last weekend
saw the matches of Romania’s first football league. On Friday in Ploiesti, FC
Hermannstadt clinched a 3-1 win against Chindia Targoviste, while in Giurgiu,
southern Romania, CFR Cluj outperformed the local side Astra 2-0. On Saturday
in Sfantu Gheorghe, central Romania, local squad Sepsi ended in a one-all draw
their game against Viitorul Constanta. In Craiova, southern Romania, the local
eleven, Universitatea, secured a 2-1 win against FC Voluntari.
Sunday saw
three matches. FC Botosani ended in a goaless draw their home match against
Academica Clincheni, while Poli Iasi secured a 3-2 away win against UTA Arad.
FCSB outperformed FC Arges 3-0. Craiova ranks first in the standings with 12
points followed by CFR with 10 and FCSB with 9.
