Florentina Iușco was the main protagonist of Romania’s Cup in athletics, an event which took place on Friday and Saturday in Bucharest. On Friday she won the hop, step and jump event with 13 meters and 84 centimeters, which is a personal record for her. On Saturday the athlete won the high jump event with 6 meters and 40 centimeters. Let’s not forget that Florentina Iușco has qualified for the Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo. Another athlete from the Romanian Olympic team who obtained good results is Alin Firfirică who won the discus throw event with 60 meters and 6 centimeters. In two weeks’ time, more precisely on August 22 and 23, Cluj Arena stadium in Cluj-Napoca will be hosting the International Athletics Championships of Romania. The competition will take place without spectators.
Now news from football. In the first play-off match for remaining and advancing in Romania’s First League, Chindia Târgoviște on Sunday defeated 2-0 CS Mioveni, in Ploiesti. The team from Dâmbovița has won thanks to the goals scored by Ovidiu Bic on 14th minute, and by the Croatian Josip Ivancic on the 74th minute. The return match takes place on Wednesday, in Mioveni. Chindia finished last season of the First League on the last place, and Mioveni ranked 3rd in the second echelon. We remind you that, from next year, the Romanian First League will have 16 teams, two more than in the last season.
CFR Cluj, Romania’s football champions, found out their adversaries in the first preliminary round of the Champions League. CFR Cluj will meet the Maltese eleven Floriana. Among the teams playing in the same stage of the competition are two former European champions: Celtic Glasgow and Red Star Belgrade. The matches will take place in a single round. The winners will play in the second preliminary round of the Champions League, and the losers in the second preliminary round of the Europa League. (L. Simion)
