The Netherlands has won the World
Handball Cup hosted by Japan after defeating Spain 30-29 in the final. In the bronze
final, Russia defeated Norway 33-28. In the pre-Olympic tournament Romania will
thus play Montenegro, Norway and North Korea.
In men’s handball, let us note that
the semi-finalists of the Romanian Cup have been decided: Dobrogea Sud
Constanta, Dinamo Bucharest, Politehnica Timisoara and CSM Bacau. In the
quarterfinals on Saturday, Dobrogea Sud defeated 38-31 CSM Alexandria. On
Sunday, Dinamo grabbed a 36-28 win over Potaissa Turda, while Poli won 24-21
against Magnum Botosani. Finally, CSM Bacau qualified after defeating HC Buzau
28-26.
The Romanian men’s ice hockey team
moved on to the third preliminary phase for the 2022 Winter Olympics in
Beijing. Romania won Group K in the second preliminary phase, following Sunday’s
10-1 win against Iceland in a match hosted by the Olympic Ice Rink in Brasov. In
the other group fixture, Kirgizstan won 5-4 against Israel following stoppage
time. In the final standings Romania ranked first with 9 points, followed by
Iceland with 6 points, Kirgizstan with 2 points and Israel with 1 point. Romania
will thus play in Group J in the final preliminary phase and will compete in
Nottingham over February 6-9, alongside Great Britain, Estonia and Hungary.
This weekend saw a new round of the
Romanian football championship. On Friday, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe won 2-1
against Dinamo Bucharest away from home. On Saturday, in Clinceni, the local
side Academica drew 1-all against FC Botosani. In Iasi, Gaz Metan Medias won
2-1 against the home side Poli, while Universitatea Craiova won 2-1 against FC
Voluntari at home. On Sunday, Chindia Targoviste drew 1-all against FC
Hermannstadt, while FCSB won 2-nil against Viitorul Constanta away from home. On Monday, CFR Cluj will play Astra
Giurgiu.
Astra Giurgiu tops the league
tables with 40 points, followed by CFR Cluj with 38 points.
