Romanian vice-champions in football, FCSB, missed qualifying to the Europa League groups. The Bucharest team was defeated by Portuguese team Vitoria Guimaraes 1-0 on Thursday night in the second leg of the play-offs. In the first leg they tied to a blank score. Romanian champions CFR Cluj are going to the Europa League group games after losing in the play-offs of the league against Slavia Prague of the Czech Republic.
The Romanian premiere league held games over the weekend counting towards the eighth round. On Friday, two games were played, FC Botosani against Academica Clinceni, as well as FC Voluntari against Universitatea Craiova. On Saturday, Gaz Metan meets in Medias Poli Iasi, while Astra meets at home in Giurgiu CFR Cluj. On Sunday, in Tg. Mures, FC Hermannstadt meets Chindia Targoviste, and FCSB meets in Pitesti Viitorul Constanta. On Monday, the last game of the stage is played, Sepsi Sf. Gheorghe against Dinamo Bucharest. Cluj leads in the standings with 17 points, followed by Viitorul, Gaz Metan, and Poli Iasi, with 15 points each.
In the last Grand Slam of the year, in the US, a single Romanian is left in the competition. Sorana Carstea qualified in the third round, defeating in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, Spanish player Aliona Bolsova. Sorana will play in the next round against American Taylor Townsend. In the second round, Townsend defeated the fourth favorite of the competition, Simona Halep, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Ana Bogdan was defeated by Croatian Petra Martic, 6-2, 6-4. In the men’s competition, Marius Copil, the only Romanian in the main competition, was stopped in the second round by French Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
