Romania won two medals in fencing
at the Summer Universiade underway in Naples, Italy. Razvan Ursachi won bronze
in the men’s sabre event, after losing in the semi-finals to Germany’s Frederic
Kindler, 15-10. Previously, Uraschi had ousted Dario Cavaliere of Italy in the
round of 16, 15-14, and Mikheil Mardaleishvili of Georgia in the quarterfinals,
15-14. The gold went to Oh Sanguk of South Korea, while Frederic Kindler won
silver. Malina Calugareanu won bronze in the women’s epee event. In the round
of 32, Calugareanu defeated Poland’s Renata Tomczak, 15-9, in the round of 16
she knocked out another Romanian, Maria Boldor, 15-8, and in the quarterfinals
she ousted Italy’s Martina Sinigalia, 15-11. In the semis, Calugareanu lost to
Erica Cipressi of Italy, who went on to win the event after defeating Morgane
Patru of France 15-3 in the final. Romania is represented by 86 athletes at the
30th edition of the Summer Universiade, enrolled in 10 events:
athletics, women’s basketball, gymnastics, rugby, swimming, judo, shooting
sport, fencing, table tennis and taekwondo. The Universiade is due to end on
July 14.
Kevin Rivera Serrano of Costa Rica
won the 2019 edition of the bike race hosted by Sibiu, which ended on Sunday
with a stage measuring 169.5 km. Aged 21, Serrano won the race with a 17 second
lead over runner up Daniel Munoz Giraldo of Columbia, his team mate at Andoni
Giocattoli Sidermec, while Croatia’s Radoslav Rogina came in third with a
39-second difference. The best-ranked Romanian athlete was Serghei Tvetcov, who
came in 5th. A total of 114 competitors took part in a time trial
and a 4-stage race that totaled 690 km.
FC Viitorul Constanta won the
Romanian Supercup for the first time after defeating CFR Cluj on Saturday
1-nil, in a match venued in Ploiesti. Andrei Artean scored the winning goal
minutes before full time with a superb shot 30 meters off goal. FC Viitorul won
the Romanian Cup in 2019, after winning 2-1 against Astra Giurgiu. The Romanian
Supercup marks the debut of the 2019-2020 football season. The first round in
the domestic championship is scheduled to kick off on July 12.
