The Romanian football squad on Saturday grabbed its first win in this years edition of Nations League. In a match held in Bucharest, counting towards Nations League Group 3, Romania won 1-0 against Finland. On Tuesday, Romania will be playing Montenegro at home.
In other news from football, Universitatea Craiova will be trained by László Balint, who replaces Laurențiu Reghecampf. The latter terminated his contract with the club in Craiova, which will play in the Conference League preliminaries this year. Aged 43, Balint last trained UTA Arad for two and a half years, from July 2019 until January 2022, helping contribute to the clubs promotion to the First League.
Simona Halep had a good start at the WTA tournament in Birmingham, totaling some 250 thousand USD in total prizes. Halep ousted Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Also worth noting is that Gabriela Ruse also advanced to the second round, after defeating Qiang Wang of China, 7-6, 7-6.
Romanian athlete Claudia Bobocea has won the 1,500-meter race in the Folksam Grand Prix hosted by Sollentuna, Sweden, as part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze. The Romanian finished the race in 4.4 minutes, a new record for Folksam Grand Prix. Laura Galvan of Mexico came in second, followed by Elise Vanderelst of Belgium.
The Romanian womens handball club, CSM Bucharest, is strengthening its team for next season. CSM has signed Grace Zaadi of France, who last year won the Olympic title in Tokyo. Zaadi has another four gold medals on her record sheet at the World Championships in Germany, in 2017 and at the European Championship in 2018, held in France. (VP)
