Romania’s fifteen came third
in the 2022 edition of Rugby Europe Championship, the second most important
competition on the continent. In the competition’s last leg, ‘the Oaks’ have
secured a 38-12 win against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Georgia came first in
the ranking with 20 points followed by Spain with 17. Romania mustered 14 points
two more than Portugal on the fourth position.
Georgia and Spain also
occupied the first two positions in the aggregate ranking of the 2021, 2022
editions and have automatically qualified for the World Cup due in France next
year. Romania has thus advanced to the Final Qualification Tournament due in
November when they will compete against three other sides representing Africa, North
and South America and Asia-Pacific. The winner will get plane tickets for the
World Cup 2023 hosted by France.
Romania’s national handball side
has blown its chances to qualify for the World Championship next year after
being eliminated by North Macedonia in the second round of the preliminaries.
North Macedonia had also won the first game in Skopje 30-22 and the match in
Bucharest went to Romania 24-22, which failed to win on aggregate.
In the domestic women’s
championship Rapid Bucharest tops the ranking, after securing a 33-31 win
against CSM Slatina in the competition’s 19th leg. Rapid has 38
points, 4 more than the champions CSM Bucharest presently ranking on the second
position with a game in hand. Magura Cisnadie ranks third after a 34-22 home win
against CSM Deva.
Last weekend saw the matches
counting towards the first football league in Romania. On Friday, FC Voluntari
clinched a 3-1 win against Universitatea Craiova, while on Saturday in Ovidiu,
south-eastern Romania, local side Farul Constanta ended in a goaless draw their
match against CFR Cluj. On Sunday, in Pitesti, southern Romania, local team FC
Arges conceded a 3-2 defeat to FCSB. FC
Botosani clinched a 1-0 home win against UTA Arad while FCU Craiova obtained a
2-0 away win against Gaz Metan Medias. On the Dinamo Stadium in Bucharest,
Rapid secured a 1-0 victory against Academica Clinceni. On the same stadium on
Sunday, the match Dinamo versus Sepsi Sf. Gheorghe ended in a draw, nil-all.
CFR Cluj tops the table with
42 points followed by FCSB with 37 and Universitatea Craiova with 30.
