Romanias Sorana Cîrstea has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open. Ranked 30th in the world, she defeated Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Cîrstea will next face the Czech player Karolina Muchova, who is world no. 10. In the womens doubles, the Romanian-Ukrainian pair Gabriela Ruse and Marta Kostiuk defeated the Russian-Australian pair Irina Khromacheva and Daria Saville 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and will next face the all-American pair Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula.

The Romanian mens handball side CSM Constanţa reached the EHF European League group stage as they defeated Spains Fraikin BM Granollers 25-22 away in the second leg of the preliminary round. CSM Constanţa will be playing in the competitions Group H, opposite Sporting Lisbon of Portugal, MOL Tatabanya KC of Hungary and KGHM Chrobry Glogow of Poland. Another Romanian side, CS Dinamo Bucharest, will play in Group G opposite trophy holders Fuchse Berlin of Germany, Chambery Savoie Mont Blanc HB of France and RK Izvidac of Bosnia and Hertegovina.
