Unfortunately the sides representing
Romania in the European women’s handball competitions managed only lackluster
shows last week. In a Champions League game, Romania’s champion CSM Bucharest
was up against ETO Gyor, the defending champions of Europe and Hungary. The
Hungarian side secured a clear win 36-27 against the Romanians but it’s also
worth mentioning that it was a Romanian to make the difference for Gyor. Crina
Pintea, the pivot of the Romanian national team, scored nine times for the
Hungarian side. The best scorer of the Romanian team was Serbian Andrea Lekic,
who scored 8 times. Gyor comes first in the group with 10 points, followed by Vipers
Kristiansand and CSM Bucharest, each with 6 points, Ferencvaros Budapest with
4, Krim Ljubljana with 3 and Thuringer with one point. CSM will take on Krim
Ljubljana in a home match on February 2nd.

Also on Saturday, Romanian side
Magura Cisnadie lost at home to Norwegian team Storhamar 28-23, in the EHF’s
group A. Magura has so far lost all the four games it played in the group. Ada
Moldovan and Montenegrin Jasna Boljevic were the best scorers of the Romanian
side against the Norwegians. Magura ranks last in the group with no points and
is expected to take on the group’s leader Team Esbjerg of Denmark on the third
of February.

Neither was trophy holder SCM
Craiova able to avoid defeat in the EHF Cup. The Romanians lost to the
Croatians from Podravka Koprivnica 18 – 23, who thus kept their first position
in group D. Maria Andreea Ianasi and Serbian Jelena Trifunovic were SCM’s best
scorers, each with four goals. SCM will be playing their next game away against
Danish side Nykobing on February 3rd.
