There was a surprise
winner at this year’s US Open, 18-year-old Emma Raducanu, a player born in
Canada to a Romanian father and a Chinese mother and living in the UK. She is
also the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam trophy. In the final, Raducanu
defeated Canada’s Laylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 and will climb to world no. 23.
Romanian women’s handball
champions CSM Bucharest lost to the Danish side Team Esbjerg 22-21 in Champions’
League Group A. The Romanian side conceded the last goal a few seconds before
the end of play, having led for the last four minutes. In other group matches, Podravka
Vegeta Koprivnica defeated Buducnost Podgorica 29-22, Rostov-Don defeated Brest
Bretagne Handball 26-24, and Borussia Dortmund drew 25-all against FTC-Rail
Cargo Hungaria.
In men’s handball, the
Romanian side Minaur Baia Mare defeated the Bulgarian side HC Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa 44-22 in the first leg of the EHF European Cup
Round 1. The second leg will be played on 18th September. If they defeat
the Bulgarian side, Minaur will face Hapoel Ashdod of Israel.
In Romanian domestic
football, in the 8th leg of the First Romanian League, CS Mioveni lost
to Chindia Târgovişte nil-1; UTA Arad drew 2-all against Rapid Bucharest; FC
Argeş defeated FC U Craiova 1-nil; FC Botoşani defeated CFR Cluj 1-nil; and Gaz
Metan Mediaș lost to FC Voluntari 1-2. The leg’s final match, the Bucharest traditional
derby between FCSB and Dinamo Bucharest ended 6-nil, the biggest goal
difference between the two sides in history. CFR Cluj still top the current
ranking with 21 points, followed by Rapid and FC Botoșani, both with 16 points. (CM)
