Tennis. The Romanian players Irina
Begu and Irina Bara were eliminated on Thursday from the women’s doubles in the
first round of the Australian Open. Irina Begu and the Czech player Kristyna
Pliskova lost to the all American pair Desirae Krawczyk and Jessica Pegula in
straight sets, while Irina Bara and the Russian player Ekaterina Alexandrova
lost to the American-Chilean pair Kaitlyn Christian and Alexa Guarachi, also in
straight sets.
Youth Olympics. Romania ranked 14th
in the team standings at the Olympic Youth Winter Games in Lausanne that came
to an end on Wednesday. With two gold medals, won by Georgeta Popescu and
Andrei Nica in bobsleigh, and a bronze medal won by Ramona Ionel in speed
skating, Romania finished ahead of countries with a longstanding tradition in
winter sports, such as Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland and Slovenia. Russia,

Football. Romanian First League
football clubs are in the final days of their training season. Dinamo Bucharest
lost to the Russian side FC Krasnodar 2-1 on Wednesday in their last friendly
