We begin with news from mens basketball. In Group A as part of the EuroCup, this past Wednesday, U BT Cluj-Napoca sustained a 91-71 defeat by German side Ulm. With a record of five wins and 13 wins, holders U BT Cluj-Napoca are 9th-placed the last but one position at the end of Europes second-tier competition. Only the first eight teams in descending order have advanced to the competitions round of last 16.
In the domestic basketball championship, this past Wednesday CSM CSU Oradea have succeeded their 22nd consecutive win, defeating CSU Sibiu, 91-70, away from home. The fixture counts towards the 1-10 group as part of the Mens Basketball National Leagues 26th round. With 31 points in 16 games, CSM CSU Oradea are at the top of the table. The runner-up team is U-BT Cluj-Napoca, with 28 points in 15 games.
With a defeat on aggregate in the second leg as part of the quarterfinal qualifier playoffs of the competition, Dinamo Bucharest was edged of the Champions League in mens handball. On Wednesday, holders Dinamo grabbed a 32-31 away win against German side THW Kiel. Last week in Bucharest, THW Kiel trounced Dinamo, 41-28. In the quarterfinals, THW Kiel go against French challengers Paris Saint-Germain.
In news from womens tennis, Irina Begu and Anhelina Kalinina were unable to go past the quarterfinals of the Miami WTA 1.000 tournament, an event with 8. 8 million dollars in prize money all told. The Romanian-Ukrainian pair sustained a 3-6, 7-6 defeat by US-Polish pair made of Bernarda Pera and Magda Linette. Begu and Kalinina received a cheque worth 62, 630 USD and were granted 215 WTA points in the doubles rankings.
In artistic gymnastics, the World Artistic Gymnastics Juniors championships are underway in Turkiyes Antalya. This past Wednesday when the competition kicked- started, Romanias mens delegation, made of David Puicea, Iustin Mihai and Norbert Marcu, came in 25th according to the nations competition.(EN)
