The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea lost to the Czech player Karolina Muchova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal, worth around 2.8 million dollars. Despite leading 5-4 in the first set, Cîrstea went on to lose the set 5-7. In the second set, she was again up 2 games to zero before losing the set 4-6. For reaching the second round, she earned 60 WTA points and around 18,000 dollars.
The last Grand Slam tournament of the year, the US Open just announced its prize money for this year’s edition, to be held between the 28th of August and the 10th of September in New York. Players will receive a total of 65 million dollars, with the winners of the singles titles each earning 3 million dollars and the finalists 1.5 million. This year, the US Open is celebrating 50 years of equal prize money for women and men. In 1973, the winners of the women’s and men’s titles, the Australian players Margaret Court and John Newcombe each got a check of 25,000 dollars.
The Romanian men’s handball champions Dinamo Bucharest defeated South Korea 47-36 in a friendly tournament held in Portugal. Dinamo will next be playing the Portuguese side FC Porto and the Spanish side Ademar Leon. (CM)
