The women’s
volleyball team Volei Alba Blaj Wednesday won their 7th national
championship. The team from Transylvania won the championship final against CSM
Târgovişte, 3-2, away from home. Alba had already won the first 2 matches, at
home, 3-0 and 3-2, respectively. The same two teams may be facing each other in
the Romanian Cup finals as well. The final tournament is scheduled on May 13
and 14, in Piteşti. On Saturday, May 13, the semi-finals will be played,
pitting Alba Blaj against CSM Lugoj and Dinamo Bucharest against CSM Târgovişte.
The final is scheduled on Sunday, May 14. Last year, in the final, Alba Blaj defeated
CSM Târgovişte, 3-1.
The
Romanian athlete Andrei Musteţ Wednesday qualified into the second round
of the World Boxing Championships in Tashkent, in the 67 kg category. In the
first round, he defeated Sibonelo Thembela Ndzimandze, from Eswatini, the
South-African country formerly known as Swaziland. Musteţ will fight in the
round of last 32 on Saturday against Dulat Bekbauov of Kazakhstan, Asia’s
vice-champion. On Tuesday, in the first round of the 80 kg category, Paul
Andrei Arădoaie lost to Mexico’s Hector Octavio Aguirre Martinez. The 3rd
Romanian athlete in the world competition, Emanuel Constantin Mican, takes on Alaa
Eldin Ghoussoun of Syria on Friday, in the second round of the 92 kg category. The
prizes at the World Championships in Tashkent are the highest in the history of
amateur boxing: USD 200,000 for the gold medallist, USD 100,000 for silver and
USD 50,000 for the bronze.
At the Ice
Hockey World Championships, Division I, Group A, the Romanian national team was
defeated in Nottingham on Wednesday by the UK, 7-0. The British national team
tops the group standings with 11 points, followed by Poland with 10 points. Romania
ranks 5th, the last but one place in the group, followed only by
Lithuania, with 0 points. The last leg is scheduled on Friday, when Romania is
to play against Poland. The top team in the group will move up into the ice hockey
world elite, while the last ranking team will be demoted to the division’s
