We begin
with the latest from volleyball. Romania’s title holders Arcada Galati have advanced to the round of 32 as part of the CEV Cup in men’s volleyball.
Arcada have advanced to the Cup’s next stage, even though the Romanian squad this
past Wednesday sustained a 2-3 defeat by Serbian team Radnicki Kragujevac, in a return-leg fixture
counting towards CEV Cup’s preliminary round. We recall Arcada secured a
3-nil win in the first leg. In the return leg, Arcada even had a match ball,
when the scoreboard displayed a 16-15 tie-break advantage, but the Romanians wasted
the opportunity to capitalize on that, so the Serbian team eventually came from
behind and won, 18-16. In the round of 32, Arcada Galati are pitted against Bulgarian
opponents Neftohimik Burgas.
In women’s basketball,
Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe this past Wednesday defeated Israeli opponents Elitzur Holon, 76-75. The
first-leg fixture counted towards EuroCup’s Group E. Two Turkish teams, Bursa Uludag Basketbol and Nesibe Aydin are also part of Group E. On
November 2nd, Sepsi take on Nesibe Aydin in Ankara
In men’s basketball, in Group H as part of
the FIBA Europe Cup, a first-timer in the European cups, SCM ”U” Craiova on Wednesday
grabbed a 77-63 home win against Sweden’s Norrköping Dolphins. Craiova have
thus succeeded their third win in a row in the group and stand great chances to
advance to the competition’s next stage. Also in Group H, German side Merlins
Crailsheim secured a 76-61 home win against CSO Voluntari.
With six points, Craiova are at the top of
the table after three rounds. Following in descending order are Crailsheim,
Voluntari and Norrköping, with four points each. In the fourth round, CSO Voluntari this coming Wednesday olay a home
game against SCM ”U” Craiova.
In a confrontation also counting towards Europe
Cup’s Group E, CSM CSU Oradea grabbed a 98 – 76 home win against Belgian side Kangoeroes
Mechelen. CSM CSU Oradea are the runner-up team in their group, with five
points, on a par with top-of-the-table team, Cholet Basket of France and with
the third-placed team, Mechelen. With four points, Bulgarian team Rilski Sportist,
are at the bottom of the table. On November the 2nd CSM CSU Oradea
play a home fixture against Cholet Basket.
In men’s handball, this past Wednesday Dinamo
Bucharest sustained a 29-35 home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain, in the Champions
League. Top scorer for Dinamo was Ukrainian handballer Andriy Akymenko, who
scored 8 goals. Dinamo are 6th-placed
