Simona Halep reached the quarterfinals of the Birmingham grass
tournament. Seeded second, she defeated Britain’s Harriet Dart in
straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, on Wednesday. Another Romanian player, 6th
seed Sorana Cîrstea, also reached the next round, as she defeated
Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic 6-1,

Handball.
Crina Pintea, the pivot of the Romanian women’s side, returned to
CSM Bucharest for the next two seasons. For the last year, she had
been playing with the Hungarian side Győr,
who reached as far as the Champions League final, which they lost to
the Norwegian side Vipers Kristiansand.
Football.
The Romanian clubs playing the qualifying matches for the Conference
League competition have found out their opponents in the second
preliminary round. The Romanian vice-champions FCSB will face the
winner of the match between Saburtalo from Georgia and Partizani
Tirana from Albania. Romanian Cup winners Sepsi
Sfântu Gheorghe will play
the winner of the match between Olimpija Ljubljana from Slovenia and
Differdange 03 from Luxembourg. Universitatea Craiova, Romania’s
third side in the preliminaries, will play Vllaznia Shkoder,
Albania’s oldest football club, established in 1919.
The Romanian football champions
CFR Cluj are training in Austria, where they are scheduled to play
five friendly matches: Orenburg from Russia on 18th
June, Red Star Belgrade on the 22nd
June, Osijek from Croatia four days later, Mlada Boleslav from the
Czech Republic on the 28th
of June and, finally, Sparta
Prague from the Czech
Republic the following day. In July, CFR Cluj will play the Armenian
side Pyunik
Yerevan
in the Champions League first preliminary round. (CM)
