Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea on Wednesday secured a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win against Dutch opponent Arantxa Rus. Cirstea has advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament in Istanbul, an event with a total sum of 240,000 USD in prize money. Cîrstea has thus secured a cheque worth 5,800 USD and 60 WTA points. In the quarterfinals, the Romanian will face Austrias Julia Grabher, who came directly from the repechage. Grabher provided a surprise with her 6-4, 6-4 win against the 5th-seeded competitor, Jil Teichman of Switzerland. We recall that second-seeded Sorana Cirstea won the 2021 edition of the tournament in Istanbul.
Volei Alba Blaj is the new Romanian womens volleyball champion. In the A1 Division on Wednesday, in a game counting towards the 4th round of the Group 1 stage, Volei Alba Blaj grabbed a 3-1 away win against CS Medgidia. Volei Alba Blaj thus distanced themselves from their main challenger, CSM Târgovişte, the team that sustained a 1-3 defeat by CS Voluntari.
In the Romanian Cup in football, on Tuesday and Wednesday the first fixtures were played, counting towards leg one of the semifinals. On Tuesday, FC Voluntari secured a 2-nil home win against FC Argeş. Scoring for FC Voluntari were their international footballers from the Republic of Moldova, Vadim Raţă, who scored on 18 minutes and Igor Armaş, who scored in minute 29. On Wednesday, in Sfântu Gheorghe, the local side Sepsi defeated Universitatea Craiova, 2-1. Sepsis Marius Ştefănescu drew first blood on 14 minutes. In the second half, Andres Dumitrescus foul play against Gustavo meant a penalty kick turned into a goal by Andrei Ivan on 55 minutes. On 87 minutes Catalin Golofca scored Sepsi s winning goal. Romanian Cups final is scheduled on May 19, 2022. The winner secures its ticket to the second preliminary round as part of the European inter-club competition, Europa Conference League. (EN)
