A 19-strong delegation will travel
to China’s Beijing to prove their mettle in the Winter Olympic Games, to
kick-start on January 4, 2022. According to the head of the Romanian delegation,
Florin Trisca, redistribution by international federation could create four
more positions for the Romanian delegation. Trisca went on to say vaccination
was not mandatory for the athletes’ participation in the Games. However, Florin
Trisca also said, all members of the Romanian delegation ahead of the Winter Olympic
Games were vaccinated. In another development, the President of the Romanian Olympic
and Sports Committee, Mihai Covaliu, stated the Romanian delegation’s set
target was to place themselves as closest to the podium as possible. All hopes
are pinned on the Romanian men’s and women’s bobsleigh crews to walk away with medals.
In women’s tennis, the
Romanian Sorana Cîrstea has advanced to the third round as part of the
Australian Open, defeating Slovak opponent Kristina Kucova, 6-2, 6-4. In the first round, the Romanian Simona Halep
grabbed a 6-3, 6-3 win against Poland’s Magdalena Frech. In the second round, Gabriela Ruse sustained a 2-6,
5-7 defeat by Russian challenger Veronika Kudermetova. Another Romanian, Jaqueline Cristian, was defeated by
US opponent Madison Keys, also 2-6, 5-7.
The Romanian – German
pair made of Raluca Olaru and Anna-Lena Friedsam has advanced to the second round
of the women’s doubles, having outclassed the all-French pair made of Alize
Cornet and Diane Parry, 6-4, 6-4. The Romanian Irina Begu, pairing up with
Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic, sustained a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 defeat by the Swedish – Russian
pair made of Rebecca Peterson and Anatasia Potapova.
In the Scottish football
championship, top-of-the-table team Glasgow Rangers, with the Romanian Ianis
Hagi on the line-up, were held to a 1-all draw by Aberdeen, away from home. Ianis
Hagi scored for Rangers on 20 minutes. It was the Romanian’s first goal this
year.
