The Erste Liga international ice hockey league has reached the semi-finals phase. Two teams are representing Romania, and they are actually pitted against each other: SC Miercurea Ciuc and ACSH Gheorgheni. On its way to the semis Miercurea Ciuc defeated DEAC Debrecen of Hungary, with 4 wins in 5 games. In turn the team from Gheorgheni ousted Corona Brasov, the defending Romanian champions, aggregate score 4-3. The tiebreaking game was played in Brasov.
After its win in the quarterfinals, the team from Gheorgheni had a bad start in the semis, losing the first two games to SC Miercurea Ciuc, both played away from home. On Sunday, Miercurea Ciuc won 4-3 in a match played before an empty stand. On Monday, the team from Miercurea Ciuc won again 3-1. The only spectators allowed in the stands were the regular 900 subscribers, considering the Government has decided to limit to a 1,000 the maximum number of fans that can attend public events, as a measure to limit the spread of COVID-19.
In the other Erste Liga semi-final, two Hungarian teams are playing: Ferencvaros and Ujpest Budapest. The score is 2-nil for Ferencvaros after the first two games played on Sunday and Monday. Ferencvaros won 6-3 and 3-1, respectively. The next games are slated for Thursday and Friday. The semi-finals are played in the best-out-of-seven-matches system.
Let us further note that CSM Galati is the leader of the domestic ice hockey championship, with 73 points in 26 games. Miercurea Ciuc is in second position with 72 points in 30 games. Finally, ACSH Gheorgheni is in third place with 62 points in 31 games.
