The end of the year
is an opportunity to have a roundup in all fields, and sport is no exception.
Performance-wise, Romanian athletes have had an acceptably good year and
Romanian sports bodies have made their final rankings public already.
Alina Vuc and Mihai
Mihuţ have been designated best athletes of 2018 at the Romanian Wrestling federation’s
Awardees gala. Signed up by Steaua Bucharest, Vuc walked ay with silver at the
European Championships, in the 50-kilogram category, while Mihut of Astra Arad
won the European title in the 63-kilogram category, the Greek-Roman style.
Dinamo Bucharest’s Alin Alexuc Ciurariu was also among the awardees. Joining
him was Ivan Guidea of CSM Lugoj. Both wrestlers walked away with bronze in the
European Championships.
Rower Gianina Beleaga,
world champion in the lightweight double scull, has been designated the best
athlete of Steaua Bucharest in 2018. Her boat mate Ionela Livia Cozmiuc has
been selected the best athlete by Romania’s other big club, Dinamo. Among
Dinamo’s other awardees were two more rowers: Madalina Beres and Denisa
Talvescu, two-time European champions in the coxless pair and coxed eight
events.
Romanian tennis has
also designated its top-flight players. As expected, WTA no 1 Simona Halep has
been designated the woman Athlete of the year. Marius Copil is the man Athlete
of the year in 2018. Copil is the only Romanian among the world’s top 100
players. In the women’s doubles Irina Begu is the athlete of the year. In the
men’s doubles, Horia Tecau had no match for the best tennis player award.
Mihaela Buzarnescu has been awarded for the most spectacular ascension, while
Monica Niculescu received an award as the longest-lasting tennis player in the
TOP 100 WTA.
