Yncheon in South Korea last week played host to the World Aerobic Gymnastics Championship. Romanian gymnasts were yet again among the protagonists. In the final rankings of the nations competition, China emerged top of the table, with 6 medals of which two gold, three silver and one bronze. South Korea was the runner-up team, with three medals, of which two gold, and a bronze one. Stepping onto the third step of the podium was Romania, with three medals, one gold, one silver and one bronze.
Winning gold for Romania was Corina Constantin, who for the first time became world champion in the individual event. We recall Romania had won silver in the nations competition, being outclassed only by China and in turn outperforming the host country South Korea. On the last day of the championship, the record of the pool of gymnasts lead by coach Maria Fumea included the bronze medal they won in the group event. The Romanian bronze medal winners were Gabriel Bocser, Bianca Gorgovan, Lucian Săvulescu, Lavinia Panaete and Dacian Barna. China and Italy were the top and the runner-up teams in the aforementioned event.
This time around as well, Romania has confirmed it still is a world power in aerobic gymnastics, where our country can perform at top level, since it has a top-notch team of coaches led by Maria Fumea as well as a top-flight pool of regulars boasting the presence of multiple world champion Corina Constantin. Rhythmic gymnastics never brought Romania notable results, while in artistic gymnastics, we recall that our teams missed the opportunity to qualify to the Olympics, in the womens as well as in the mens version of the competition.
