Attention-grabbing worldwide
is the ongoing tennis tournament in Roland Garros, the season’s leading tennis
competition on a clay court. In 2022, no less than seven Romanian women tennis
players have been included in the tournament’s main draw for the women’s
singles event. Five of them have gained access to the main draw thanks to their
current positions according to the world rankings, while two others have been designated
as seeded competitors in Roland Garros. Simona Halep is 19th seeded, while Sorana
Cîrstea, 26th . The other three Romanian tennis players are Gabriela Ruse, Irina Begu and Ana Bogdan. Irina Bara was also included
in the main draw as she went past the qualifiers. There was also Mihaela
Buzărnescu, who was granted the status of lucky loser, even though she was
defeated in the qualifiers’ last round.
Of the aforementioned Romanian tennis
players, only Sorana Cirstea, Irina Begu and Simona Halep went past the first
round. On Sunday, Sorana trounced Germany’s Tatjana Maria in a straight-set
win, 6-3, 6-3. Irina Begu had a hard time defeating Italian Jasmine Paolini. Rain at Roland Garros caused a two-day
extension of the match, on Monday and Tuesday. Irina eventually secured a 4-6,
6-1, 7-6 win. On Tuesday, Simona Halep succeeded a nail-biting win against
Germany’s Nastasja Schunk, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. We recall Halep won the Roland Garros
tournament in 2018, and played the final in 2014 and 2017. Simona Halep was
unable to play in the 2021 edition of the tournament in Paris because of an
injury.
The other four
Romanians who played in the first round have been defeated. The closest to
advancing to the second round was Ana Bogdan. In a heart-throbbing game against Viktorya Azarenka of
Belarus this past Monday, Ana Bogdan won the first set on tie-break, then she
fought really hard to win the second set, yet she was defeated, also on tie-break.
After almost three hours of play, Azarenka won the decisive set, 6-2. As for
the other three Romanians, they were being made short work of. Gabriela Ruse was outclassed by Belgium’s Elise Mertens, 6-3, 6-1,
while Irina Bara lost to her opponent from Kazakhstan, Yulia Putintseva, also
6-3, 6-1. Mihaela Buzarnescu conceded defeat to Madison Brengle of the United
States of America, 6-1, 6-2.
