In the Europa
League preliminaries, Romania’s elevens will be up against opponents without an
impressive record list. In the first preliminary round of the competition, Viitorul
Constanta has been pitched against Racing Football Club Union of Luxembourg.
The Romanians will be playing their first game abroad on July 12th and
the return match in Ovidiu on July 19th. Racing Football Club won
the Luxembourg Cup last season after a 1-0 win against Hostert in the finals.
Racing Football Club ranked 7th with 35 points out of 26 games in
the local championships.
If they beat
Racing Football Club, the Romanian side coached by Gheorghe Hagi will be
playing Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem in the second preliminary round. They would be
playing the first match at home in Ovidiu on July 26th and the
return match in the Netherlands on August 2nd.
Romania’s
vice-champions FCSB are playing directly in the second preliminary round
against the winners of a game pitching Slovenian side Rudar Velenje against the
winner of the match opposing Tre Fiori of San Marino to the Welsh side Bala
Town. Tre Fiori will be taking on Bala Town on June 28th and July 5th
and the winner will be up against Rudar Velenje on July 12th and 19th.
FCSB will play their first match away from home on July 26th with a
return game in Bucharest on August 2nd.
Viitorul
Constanta has already started training. With former Romanian football legend Gheorghe
Hagi as their patron and coach, Viitorul has already met Zimbrul Chisinau from
the Republic of Moldova in a home match. We recall that Zimbrul has reaped 8
championship titles. Viitorul secured a clear win 5-0 though Hagi used an
experimental lineup, sending no less than 31 players to the pitch. Viitorul
will soon be leaving for a training camp in Poland where they are expected to play
several friendlies until July 6th.
FSCB is
currently training in Brasov, central Romania. Croatian Antonio Jakolis has
also joined the side coached by Nicolae Dica. We recall that Jakolis had been
borrowed by Cypriot side Appolon Limassol last season.
