European football becomes increasingly spectacular. The UEFA Champions League continues to deliver world-class football as we saw 10 goals in the two Champions League semi-final matches on Tuesday and Wednesday. FC Liverpool defeated AS Rome 5-2 on home turf. In 70 minutes Liverpool had already scored five goals, but Rome managed to prevent a catastrophe and scored twice towards the end of the match thus keeping some hope to qualify.
The Romanians have proven that a 3-goal difference is not irretrievable even in the face of an opponent such as Barcelona. Barcelona’s coach, German Jurgen Klopp, has been criticized for his tactics in the last minutes of the match with Rome, by the former team star Steve Gerrard, who said: “It’s all about game management and being professional and keep your focus until the end. Liverpool came down in the gears towards the end and paid for it. They’ve given Roma a little glimmer of hope.”
Also, holders Real Madrid came from a goal down to win a precious 2-1 victory at Bayern Munich on Wednesday and carry a considerable advantage into their Champions League semi-final second leg in Spain. Real needed a 44th-minute equaliser by Marcel, to cancel out Joshua Kimmich’s opener. Fifteen minutes later Real substitute Marco Asensio beat Sven Ulreich and scored in the 57th minute. Bayern had lost only one of their last 22 home games in the competition.
The return matches are played next week. On Tuesday, Real Madrid play Bayern on Santiago Bernabeu while on Wednesday, on Olimpico, Roma is up against Liverpool.
