Romanias delegation at the European Wrestling Championships hosted by Russia has grabbed very good results. Our athletes grabbed five medals in Kaspiysk, given that the target set by the Romanian Wrestling Federation was two medals.
The president of the Romanian Wrestling Federation, Razvan Pircalabu, told the press that the medals grabbed in Russia make for Romanias best performance at a European Wrestling Championship after 1989.
In the Greek-Roman style, Mihai Mihut won gold in the 63-kg category, while Alin Alexuc-Ciurariu won bronze in the 130-kg category. In the freestyle event, Alina Vuc won silver in the 50-kg category. Alexandra Nicoleta Anghel won bronze in the 72-kg category, while Ivan Guidea also won bronze in the 61-kg category.
For his remarkable performance, we have designated Mihai Mihut Athlete of the Week on RRI.
In Kaspiysk, Mihut first wrestled Leo Alexandre Sylvain Tdudezca of France. In the quarterfinals he ousted Nikolai Ivanov Vichev of Bulgaria, while in the semis he knocked out Zaur Kabaloev of Russia. In the final match, Mihai Mihut won against Stig-Andre Berge of Norway, bringing Romania its first gold medal in the European Championship after an eleven-year break.
Mihai Radu Mihut was born on March 16, 1995. He took up wrestling at the age of 10. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Sports Education in Arad, and starting last week he became one the athletes deemed favourite to win a medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. Mihut will be trying to defend his European title next year, at the European Championships to be hosted by Bucharest in 2019.
