Athlete of the Week on RRI: Tennis Player Horia Tecau
Horia Tecau has won his first tournament in 2017.

Last week Romanian tennis player Horia Tecau won his first tournament in 2017. Along with his team mate, Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands, Horia Tecau won the doubles event at the tournament in Dubai, totaling some 2.5 million dollars in prize money. The win brought them a 157-thousand-dollar check and 500 ATP points.
Tecau and Rojer were seeded 4th in the Dubai doubles. In the first round, they ousted the pair made up of Mate Pavic of Croatia and Alexander Peya of Austria, 7-6, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, they were supposed to play Plilipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer of Germany, but the two withdrew from the competition. In the semi-finals they took on the competition’s number one seeds, Henri Kontinen of Finland and John Peers of Australia, whom they defeated 7-6, 6-3. In the final match, Tecau and Rojer won against Rohan Bopanna of India and Marcin Matkowski of Poland, final score 4-6, 6-4, 10-3.
With this win, Horia Tecau has climbed four positions in ATP doubles standings, currently ranking 15th. For his achievement, we have designated him Athlete of the Week on RRI.
Horia Tecau was born in Brasov, on January 19, 1985. He has been playing tennis since the age of 7. In 2002 he won the Wimbledon’s junior doubles alongside another Romanian, Florin Mergea. He turned pro in 2003. Since July 2008 he has been ranking among the world’s top 100 players in doubles standings, and since 2009 he has been ranking among the world top 50 players. He has been constantly climbing in ATP doubles. His all-time best was the 2nd ranking, which he shared with Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands after winning the ATP finals in London in November 2015.
