The last Grand Slam tournament of the year, the US Open, is underway this week. Prior to this Winston-Salem in North Carolina, US, played host to a men’s tournament, offering over 600 thousand dollars in prize money. In the men’s singles, Spanish player Roberto Bautista Agut won the competition after defeating Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia in the final, 6-4, 6-4. The men’s doubles trophy went to Horia Tecau of Romania and Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer. In the final game Tecau and Rojer defeated Julio Peralta of Chile and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina, 6-3, 6-4. For this remarkable performance we have designated Horia Tecau Athlete of the Week on Radio Romania International.
This was the 50th doubles final in Horia’s career, and the third trophy he won this year alongside Rojer, after the ATP tournaments in Dubai and Geneva.
Horia Tecau was born on January 19, 1985 in Brasov. He took up tennis at the age of 7 and won the juniors’ doubles final at Wimbledon alongside another Romanian, Florin Mergea. He turned pro in 2003. Since July 2008 he has been constantly ranked among the world’s top 100 players and in the top 50 since November 2009. He continued to climb the rankings until he became second-placed, a position he has held since November 2015, after winning the ATP Finals in London together with his team mate, Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands.
