Romania has reported few notable results in professional cycling in recent years. This makes Sergey Tsvetkov’s win in the Tour de Korea even more praiseworthy. For his remarkable achievement, we have designated Sergey Tsvetkov Athlete of the Week on RRI.
The tour consisted in five stages. Tvetkov, currently competing for United Healthcare, was followed by Stepan Astafiev of Kazakhstan, competing for Vino Astana Motors, with a 28-second delay, and by Matteo Busato of Italy, running for Wilier Tristina Selle Italia, with a 37-second delay.
Sergey Tsvetkov was born on December 29, 1988 in Chisinau, the Republic of Moldova. In 2007 he won the Moldovan time trial, a trophy he reclaimed in 2009. He then started to grab good results in international competitions. In 2014 he was awarded Romanian citizenship. He reported his first major result competing on behalf of Romania the very same year, when he came in third at the Colorado Tour. In 2015, alongside his compatriot, Eduard-Michael Grosu, he completed Il Giro, the Tour of Italy, a feat never before achieved by a Romanian professional racing cyclist. Tsvetkov finished in 139th place, while Grosu was ranked 150th. The last time a Romanian athlete took part in a grand tour was at the Tour de France in 1936.
Also in 2015, Sergey Tsvetkov became Romania’s champion in the road and time trial races. In 2016 he defended his time trial trophy and came in third position in the road race. In 2017 he ranked second in the Colorado Classic race, and came in third at the Tour of Utah.
