Romanian
football champions CFR Cluj had a perfect start in the Europa League group
phase. Last Thursday, Dan Petrescu’s trainees defeated CSKA Sofia of Bulgaria
2-nil, and is now top of the tables in Group A. Ciprian Deac had a stellar performance,
contributing to both goals scored by the Romanian side. On minute 53, Adrian
Păun took a shot corner, Deac sent a superb cross into the penalty box and
Venezuelan striker Mario Rondon sent the ball into the back of the net with a
header. Twenty minutes later, Croatian player Gabriel Debeljuh was tackled
illegally in the penalty area, and the referee ruled penalty kick. Deac scored
easily, setting the final score, 2-nil. For his crucial contribution to CFR’s
win in Sofia, we have designated Ciprian Deac Athlete of the Week on RRI.
