In the 20th round of the Romanian First League championship, the last but one of this year, FCSB, former Steaua București, meets Rapid also from Bucharest. The match brings face to face two of the most popular football teams in Romania. Originally, Rapid was the railway workers club in Bucharest, founded in 1923, and Steaua belonged to the Army and was created in 1947, under the name of the Army Sports Association, or ASA. Throughout history, Rapid has also been called CFR, from Căile Ferate Române- the Romanian Railways and Locomotiva București. The military group was renamed the Army Central Sports Club in 1948, and then, in 1950, the Army Central House. It was named Steaua București in 1961. Since 2017 it has been called FCSB.
The first match between the two teams took place on December 4, 1947, when CFR beat ASA 1 to 0. They played a total of 135 games, of which Steaua won 60. Rapid won 32 times, and 43 matches ended in a draw. Lately, however, the score has been much more balanced. Out of the last ten games, Rapid won 3, and Steaua, subsequently called FCSB, won 4, and 3 ended in a draw. The latest game between the two teams, played in the summer, in the current championship round, was won by Rapid 1-0.
Wednesdays game comes in a good context for both teams. FCSB is on the 2nd place in the championship and comes after 12 matches without any defeat, of which it won 11. Rapid is on the 4th place and lost, in the last nine stages, only one game. However, the difference between the two teams is big, 12 points.
We remind you that the games of the 20th round of the First League championship take place from Tuesday to Thursday. The first two matches, on Tuesday: Academica Clinceni with FC Voluntari and Universitatea Craiova with UTA. Wednesday – FC Botoșani with Gaz Mediaș and FC Argeș with Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. On Thursday, Chindia Târgoviște with FC U Craiova, CS Mioveni with Dinamo Bucharest and Farul Constanța with CFR Cluj. Cluj leads the standings with 51 points, 8 points away from FCSB. (LS)
