GENEVA CERN – The Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, on Monday participated, in Geneva, in the national flag-rising ceremony marking Romania’s joining the European Organization for Nuclear Research – CERN. According to a communiqué of the presidential administration, Klaus Iohannis is accompanied by a delegation of Romanian researchers who collaborate with CERN as well as by two young students, winners of the National Physics Olympics. On July 17, 2016 Romania became the 22nd full-fledged member state of CERN, the world’s biggest research center in the field of Elementary Particle Physics.
BERLIN – On the second day of his official visit to Germany, the Romanian PM Dacian Cioloş met with political leaders and representatives of some top companies from Germany in the State of Bavaria. The Romanian official talked with the German businesspeople about the opportunities Romania offers to investors, especially in the field of research and development. This is the 4th meeting the Romanian PM had with the German businesspeople. On Monday PM Cioloş talked with the managerial team of the BMW Bavarian carmaker and with representatives of the Eastern Committee of German Economy. Dacian Cioloş also met with the speaker of the Bavarian Parliament, Barbara Stamm. The visit ended with a meeting with the Bavarian PM, Horst Seehofer. The Romanian PM visited Germany for the 2nd time this year, after he previously visited Berlin in January, when he met with the German chancellor Angela Merkel. Germany is Romania’s main economic partner, and the State of Bavaria is considered the engine of German economy.
G20 SUMMIT – The US will not lift the sanctions against Russia as long as the Minsk agreements are not met, said the American President Barack Obama at a press conference at the G20 summit. Obama added that it was important for both sides to reach an agreement in the coming weeks. Monday, the last day of the G20 summit hosted by China, was devoted to high-level bilateral meetings. The summit also approached the issue of the Brexit. The British PM, Theresa May, received assurances from the American President, Barack Obama, that Washington would give priority to its negotiations with the EU as regards the free trade agreement. In turn, the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, drew attention that the practical capabilities of Europe to host new waves of refugees are close to the limits.
ROMANIAN PUBLIC TV – A communiqué of the Romanian Public Television informs viewers and the mass media that the National Anti-Corruption Directorate is, these days, undertaking verifications of the public television’s activity. The announcement was made by virtue of the transparency which the current management of the public television wants to promote as regards its activity. The verification focuses on commercial contracts concluded over the past 10 years. The communiqué also shows that the public television management provides the necessary support for the good development of verifications.
POLITICIAN PROSECUTED – The Senate’s Permanent Bureau on Monday forwarded to the Juridical Committee the file involving senator Gabriel Oprea, a former interior minister, accused of manslaughter in the case of the death of police officer Bogdan Gigină. The Committee has a 5-day deadline for a first assessment. The talks on presenting the report in this case will be resumed next Monday. Police officer Bogdan Gigină died last year in a motorcycle crash while he was part of minister Oprea’s official motorcade. According to prosecutors, Oprea was not entitled to an official motorcade as he was traveling for personal purposes.
TENNIS – The Romanian tennis player, Simona Halep, world’s no. 5 player, on Monday met the Spanish Carla Suarez Navarro (12 WTA), in the eighth finals of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year with total prizes up for grabs worth more than 22 million dollars. Halep defeated Navarro in two sets, 6-2, 7-5. She will play in the quarterfinals against the American Serena Williams, world’s no. 1 player. (translation by Lacramioara Simion)
