FUEL — Parties making up the ruling coalition in Bucharest have agreed to further subsidize the car fuel price until the end of the year, Social Democrat leader Marcel Ciolacu has announced. The state currently pays a fixed subsidy of 0.5 RON per litre of petrol and diesel, a scheme that expires at the end of the month. Ciolacu also said that among the sectors benefitting the energy price cap under an ordinance pending the Senate’s approval are also generic medicine producers. Parties in power and in opposition have submitted a number of amendments to the Government’s Emergency Ordinance that regulates prices on the energy market.

LONDON — Princess Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown and Prince Radu took part in a family reunion at the Windsor Castle upon the invitation of King Charles III after the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Over 100 heads of state and government and members of the royal families from around the world attended the ceremonies in London while hundreds of thousands lined the streets to say farewell to the revered monarch. The event, which brought together the largest number of world leaders ever, was also attended by US president Joe Biden and by the Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis.

FILM – The film Immaculate, directed by Monicăi Stan and George Chiper-Lillemark is Romania’s proposal for ‘Best international feature film’ category of the Oscars, the National Cinematography Centre has announced. Awarded in Venice in 2021 and in Portugal in 2022, the film is a psychological drama based on true facts, and, up to a point, a story of survival.

UN – Romanian president Klaus Iohannis is heading the Romanian delegation at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly. The meetings agenda includes several topical issues, such as peace and security, sustainable development, social inclusion, cybersecurity, human rights, biodiversity, water management and global challenges. The Romanian president will highlight, at the meeting, the need for joint solutions at global level to issues like energy security, climate change and access to education. Iohannis previously attended a global summit on food security, where he mentioned Romanias efforts to ensure the transit of Ukrainian grain and its commitment to avoiding a food crisis. In a video message on Monday at Transforming Education summit in New York, Iohannis spoke about Romanias commitment to upgrading its education system and protecting its citizens from the challenges of the economic environment.

UKRAINE – The referendums planned by Moscow with a view to annexing additional territories from Ukraine will have no impact, Ukrainian Foreign Ministrer Dmytro Kuleba said Tuesday. The statement was made after separatists from the Ukrainian regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk announced referendums for the unification with Russia, between September 23 and 27. Ukraine’s reaction to this has been very firm — it will continue to fight to free these territories from Russian occupation.

ECONOMY Roughly half of the Romanians (47%) have reduced spending this year to cope with the latest price hikes, whereas a quarter are saving money for education and professional training, an Erste Group poll entitled Money Matters shows. According to the same sources, the Romanians have adjusted their financial behavior against the rising inflation and the latest price hikes.

TENNIS — The Romanian Irina Begu is the main favorite of the Budapest tennis tournament and in the first round she will be up against Rebeka Stolmar of Hungary. On Monday, Romanian Irina Bara was defeated in the first round by the French Oceane Dodin, 7-6, 6-3. Irina Begu went up 8 places in the WTA rankings and is now 33rd, after winning Tiriac Foundation Trophy in Bucharest on Sunday. Simona Halep (WTA 9), Sorana Cirstea (WTA 39), Ana Bogdan (WTA 54), Jacqueline Cristian (WTA 68) and Elena-Gabriela Ruse (WTA 98) are among the best 100 players in the world. (EE)
