The Romanian authorities on Friday evacuated several other hundred people from across Galati County, worst-hit by the recent flooding. The latest toll shows that that 9 people were killed. Also, 1,700 houses and households have been flooded. Weather forecast services on Friday issued an orange code warning of heavy downpours, in place until Saturday, for three counties in south-eastern Romania, Galati County included. Six other counties in the same area have been placed under a yellow code warning. Hydrologists have also issued an orange code alert for flooding, in place until Saturday, for several rivers in the counties of Galati, Tulcea and Constantsa.
Ukraine has agreed to set up a Romanian Department at the Cernauti University, the Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean announced on Friday, in a press conference held jointly with his Ukrainian counterpart, Leonid Kojara, currently on a visit to Bucharest. The two ministers signed the 2013 — 2014consultation agreement between the Romanian and the Ukrainian foreign ministries. One topic approached by the two ministers was the completion of negotiations over the agreement regarding petty trade on Romania’s northern border. Cernauti is the capital of the Ukrainin region bearing the same name , but also of the historical territory of North Bukovina, which was part of Romania before 1944.
The British Foreign Secretary has decided the cancelation of a recruitment program for East-European seasonal agricultural workers, mostly Romanians and Bulgarians. The decision has been contested by farmers’ associations, who warn that the measure will increase prices of fruit and vegetables, reads the Guardian. The program, established 60 years ago, allowed for one third of the seasonal workers working in agriculture to be foreigners, East-European in particular.
The opening ceremony of the Black Sea Rotational Force 14 multi-national exercise was held on Friday a the administrative center in the commune of Mihail Kogalniceanu, south-eastern Romania. According to representatives of the Defense Ministry, the exercise will be held I Romania between September 13 — March 2014, and March — September 2014, with the participation of some one thousand soldiers from Bulgaria, Romania and the US. 500 Romanians will participate in the exercise.
